Charlotte stormed into her bedroom and hurled her haversack across the room. She paced up and down for several minutes until she regained her temper. What was wrong with the man? Theyâd been getting on so well and she thought they understood each other. How wrong had she been?
They werenât compatible at all â it had been the sunshine, the delicious picnic, the romance of the moment that had made her think they might be able to make a go of it. He was basically a bad-tempered man totally lacking a sense of humour. Heâd allowed his unfortunate injury to turn him into someone who, on further reflection, she really didnât want to get closer to.
She kicked off her shoes and flung herself onto the bed. This trip had started so well. Heâd kissed her, put his arm around her, and sheâd really enjoyed it. He called her darling, sweetheart, and sheâd loved those endearments too.
They were, obviously, from similar backgrounds, which gave them something in common but that was as far as it went. Sheâd blithely said his injured leg wasnât a problem, that she found him attractive â this was true. He was everything she could hope to have in a future lover. Even thinking these words made her hot all over.
However, what she couldnât deal with were his mercurial changes of mood. His grim outlook on life, the fact that he thought everyone was treating him differently because of his leg. That she couldnât live with, didnât want to. When eventually she got married it would be to someone she could laugh with, share memories with, say whatever she liked to without fear and sheâd never have that with him. Sheâd be constantly walking on eggshells wondering if she was going to trigger an angry response.
What was she going to do about the situation? She was supposed to be a young woman with high moral principles and although sheâd not condemned Nancyâs behaviour, she had been slightly shocked. Jane hadnât pre-empted her marriage vows and Charlotte had always thought sheâd not do so herself.
But being with Dan when she found him almost irresistible physically would inevitably mean she went to bed with him. She didnât want to do that and for the second time that day bitterly regretted her impulsive decision to invite him to accompany her. She might be considered an adult, had held down a responsible job for two years, but when it came to affairs of the heart she was as innocent as a child.
This was a disaster of her own making and the only way she could extricate herself was to abandon him at the hotel and continue to the base on her own. He was a resourceful man and could find his own way back to London. Doing this would be so appalling that any hope of a reconciliation would be out of the question. This would be better for both of them as if she spent any more time with him they would quite likely become lovers and then get married.
